SYNOPSIS
A documentary that follows the McMillian family in the wake of De'Andre's passing — a young man loved deeply by a community that still carries him.
The film does not center grief as a destination. It moves through it — tracing the family's journey of remembrance, and the search for joy and meaning in the aftermath of loss.
What does it mean to live a meaningful life?
January 11 · Monroeville, Alabama · De'Andre McMillian Day
"De'Andre's memory continues to inspire diversity in the community and brings forth an awareness of Mental Health with dignity and grace."
— Mayor Charles AndrewsCity of Monroeville, Alabama

I didn't set out to make a film about grief. I set out to make a film about De'Andre.
There's a difference. Grief is what happens after. De'Andre is what came before — his laughter, the warmth, the way a community wraps themselves around him and his impact and calls him theirs. The Long Road Home is an attempt to hold both at once. The before and the after. The loss and the love that made the loss matter.
Visually, I wanted the film to feel like memory itself — always reaching for something that holds a mirror. There is beauty here. There is also rupture. I stayed inside the discomfort long enough for something true to emerge.
So much of my understanding of power is rooted in the sacred — in community, in connection.
HOMECOMING extends that world into a live space. I want every person who walks in to feel what it means to carry someone, something — to carry themselves. The room is the film. The audience is the family. The dancing is a celebration of life — still possible, still worth the journey.
The times are always calling for art that heals. This is ours.

THEMES
What we leave behind.
Not just to have been present — but to have left something behind that lives on in your absence. Meaning. The result of what we leave behind.
Grief as a portal.
The film does not ask audiences to sit in grief. It invites them to move through it — toward connection, joy, and the question at the center of a life fully lived.
Art that heals.
Storytelling is a portal that holds a mirror to reflect the times. The times are always calling for art that heals.
The Journey.
What we thought we lost is once found. The Kid stays curious — open, unafraid, full of wonder. The Admiral navigates with strategy. Both must co-exist.

Highway Memorial
Monroeville · LA · San Diego
We are five months from Montgomery. Since the premiere of The Long Road Home: a city stopped, a mayor signed his name, and De'Andre McMillian Day was proclaimed in Monroeville, Alabama. An Adopt-A-Mile highway memorial was dedicated in his name.
Montgomery carries history in its body — and keeps moving anyway.
The tour is the pathway toward release, remembering, and returning.
